Markku rakensi talon perheelleen omin käsin, kuten vahvan miehen kuuluu.
Hän ahkeroi aamusta iltaan, jotta hänen seitsemällä lapsellaan olisi katto päänsä päällä. Haaste oli kuitenkin liian suuri, ja lopulta Markku paloi loppuun. Hän päätyi jättämään perheensä ja katosi ulkomaille.
Nyt, 30 vuotta myöhemmin, hän asuu samassa omakotitalossaan erakkona. Muu perhe on muuttanut pois jo aikoja sitten. Välit lapsiin ovat rikki. Vanhuuden päivinään hän yrittää yhä rakentaa taloa valmiiksi, mutta ketä varten?
Elokuvantekijä matkustaa lapsuudenkotiinsa kohtaamaan isänsä, jota ei koskaan oppinut tuntemaan. Yhdessä he rakentavat rautaista porttia keskeneräisen talon eteen samalla etsien kadonnutta yhteyttä toisiinsa.

Minne hylätyt kirjat menevät?
Nainen siivoaa kuolleen miehen asuntoa. Hän tyhjentää kirjahyllyn, selaa läpi valokuvat ja heittää roskiin vuosia vanhat onnittelukortit. Toisaalla työmies aloittaa päiväänsä. Hän kasaa ympärilleen valtavan määrän kirjoja, joista käy läpi jokaisen. Aika kuluu, hetket vierivät, kirjat kutsuvat lukijan mukaan viimeiselle matkalle.
Jäähyväiset sanoille on elokuva kirjoista, kuolemasta ja kiertokulusta. Elokuva pohtii sitä, millaisen jäljen jätämme jälkeemme ja tarjoaa lohtua merkityksettömyyden pelosta kärsiville. Elokuvassa tarinat ja historia tuovat turvaa ja kannattelevat, vaikka eivät pysy luonamme ikuisesti.

Markku built a house to his family with his own bare hands like a strong man is supposed to do. He worked hard from dawn to dusk so that his seven children would have a roof above their heads. Unfortunately, the task ended up being too much and Markku burnt out. One day, he decided to leave his family, and to disappear abroad.
Cut to present day, 30 years later. Markku now lives in that same house. He barely has contact with his children. Now, as an old man, he is still trying to fulfil his promise to himself: he wants to complete the construction of the house even if his family doesn't live there anymore.
The filmmaker travels to his childhood home to face his father, who he never got to know properly. Together they build a steel gate in front of the unfinished house while simultaneously trying to build a relationship between each other.

Where do the abandoned books go?
An elderly woman cleans up the apartment of the deceased. She empties bookshelves, goes through old photographs, and throws aged greeting cards into trash. Elsewhere, a working man starts his day. He gathers piles of books around him. Time goes by, moments pass, books invite the reader to their final journey.
Goodbye words is a documentary short film about books, cyclicality, and acceptance of death. The film ponders what kind of trace we leave behind and offers consolation for the fear of insignificance.
