Surunkesyttäjät on dokumentaarinen elokuva ihmisistä, jotka ovat päättäneet kohdata surun sitä väistämättä tai pakenematta. Filmille kuvattu elokuva kertoo rakkaudesta, muutoksesta, surusta ja luopumisesta.

Suru on aina ravisteleva kokemus, minkä jälkeen kaikki on toisin. Millä tavalla toisin? – Sitä ei voi tietää, ellei pelottomasti astu surun maailmaan ja antaudu muutokselle, jonka suru tuo mukanaan. Elämä on luopumisen harjoittelemista kohti viimeistä luopumista – luopumista elämästä. Elokuvan lyhyistä episodeista kasvaa kollektiivinen tarina elämän rajallisuuden hyväksymisestä ja tarpeesta ylläpitää yhteyttä toiseen ihmiseen, silloinkin kun se on mahdotonta.

Elokuvan ihmiset ja heidän tarinat muodostavat teemallisesti yhden suuren tarinan surun läpi kulkemista ja siitä vapautumisesta. Suru muuttaa aina ihmistä toiseksi, eikä surusta pääse eteenpäin ennen kuin on valmis hyväksymään muutoksen ympäröivässä todellisuudessa ja itsessään. Surunkesyttäminen ei ole raivokasta taistelua, vaan hyväksymistä ja surun kanssa elämistä, mistä kumpuaa voima ja vapautuminen.

Sorrow Tamers is a creative documentary of a time in which our lives are searching for a new form: Sorrow always shakes up the life we used to know, and everything is changed. Changed how? – You do not know, unless you fearlessly step into the world of grief and, without fearing the change, step out in due course as a new, transformed version of yourself.

In the film 10 brave individuals, who have decided to face the sorrow in themselves and their lives, are trying to figure out how sorrow is working in them. Shot on film, the short episodes of individual stories form a larger story of accepting grief as a part of human life. The film is about humanity, the longing for another human being, and the intrinsic need of human beings to reach out to each other, even when it is not possible. Life is learning how to let go before death, the ultimate momentum of letting go.

Two worlds alternate in the film: the black-and-white film footage of 10 characters of grief, and the episodes in colour film that depict the stages of the mind, as if exploring a more surrealistic world with the different avatars of sorrow, and the images of dreams, fears and moods. Two different shooting formats and visual styles create the finite balance between heaviness and lightness. Combining these two worlds and finding a balance between them forms a more believable and approachable documentary film than either approach alone. Shooting on film introduces a cinematic atmosphere and makes it easier for the viewer to approach the subject matter that might otherwise feel challenging. A film about sorrow, longing and letting go – the essentials of life and love.
