Armotonta menoa – hoivatyön lauluja on tumman huumorin sävyttämä dokumentaarinen lauluelokuva suomalaisen vanhusten hoivan tilasta, hoivatyön tekijöistä ja kokijoista hoivan markkinoilla. Dokumentaaristen episodien ja laulujen kautta elokuva kertoo kriisiytyneen vanhushoivan arjesta.

Elokuvan keskeinen tarinahahmo on lähihoitaja Tiina. Hän oli ensimmäisiä hoitajia, joka toi esiin ongelmia ympärivuorokautisessa hoivassa, joutuen yksityisen yrityksen ja kaupunkinsa mustalle listalle. Kaavin kunnan eläkeläiset joutuvat seuraamaan sivusta kunnassaan tapahtuvaa hoivayksikön ulkoistusta. He ovat aktiivisia ja tuntevat asiansa, mutta demokraattinen päätöksenteko on karannut kuntalaisten ulottumattomiin. Kestävyysvajeen yhtälöä ratkotaan myös digiloikkaa tekemällä: robotti kohtaa vanhuksia hoivakodissa, hoitajat työskentelevät etähoivakeskuksessa.

Tehokkuuden, voitontavoittelun ja säästöjen ristipaineessa hoivatyön eetos on rapautunut. Ikäihmisistä puhutaan vain taloudellisen kasvun jarruna ja työtä tekevien taakkana. Elokuva muistuttaa siitä, mistä työmarkkinoille hyödyttömien ihmisten hoivassa on kyse: jakamattomasta ihmisarvosta. Laulujen kautta elokuva luo katseen hoivan kaupallistamisen ja hoivan eetoksen väliseen yhteensovittamattomuuteen. Siitä mistä ei voi puhua, on laulettava.

Ruthless Times - Songs of Care is a documentary film with choral tableau vivant scenes juxtaposed with documentary episodes, capturing the current crisis in the Finnish elderly care sector. With its dark humor, and at times grim but poignant moments, the film portrays the unravelling of the ethos behind caring for the elderly citizens of a Nordic welfare society, illuminating the mismatch between the ethical and economical foundations of care work.

The main protagonist, Tiina, was one of first care-workers to bring up the malpractices occurring in the elderly care sector in Finland, and who was subsequently black listed and received personal threats.  The film unravels the experiences of retirees witnessing the privatization of their local elderly care services in a small municipality in Eastern Finland. Their quiet protest is met with shadowy undemocratic dealings of local politics. The challenges caused by the growing elderly population are being solved with technological innovations; robots roaming the halls of care homes and nurses being relegated to remote-care call centers.

The care-workers’ anonymous testimonies are composed into choral songs, depicting everyday experiences of those working in the field. Through the songs, the film gives a voice to those who don’t dare to talk for fear of losing their jobs. Retirees and elderly citizens sing impudent songs playing with the economic jargon of our time, making visible the absurdity of the bureaucratic language that has penetrated every aspect of human life.

What cannot be talked about, has to be sung!
